2009 Ride for a Cure raises $15,015
for Leukemia Research

Thanks to the people at the Neighbourhood Mechanic Show

The 5th annual UFCW "Ride for a Cure and Poker Run" – in support of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC) was a roaring success!

“I’m very happy to be riding again this year with such a generous group of people, who along with our sponsors have helped raise $15,015 today bringing our five-year total to $50,856” commented Shawn Haggerty, President of UFCW Local 175. It is for all the families in our communities and workplace who are affected by cancer that members and staff of Locals 175 & 633 work so hard throughout the year to raise money for the LLSC. “Last year our Local raised $375,000, which helped bring the national total to an astounding $ 1,659,539.62.

The day’s ride, held on Saturday August 8th, took in many local attractions such as Terra Cotta, Cheltenham Badlands, the Loretto Inn and Hockley Valley. The 43 riders and volunteers arrived from all over including Pefferlaw, Arthur, Port Dover and Guelph.

Winners this year included: Last year’s winners; Rob Nicholas, who won a weekend car rental from National Car Rental and a weekend get away at the Holiday Inn Select in Mississauga, for collecting the most pledges ($655) and Lorilei White, who won a custom leather vest from Freak~n~Leather for the second most pledges collected ($350). The prize for most pledges collected by a club or organization went to a group of riders from Keswick Ontario with a total donation of $1,875.00.

The Ride for a Cure committee gives special thanks to the officers of Peel Regional Police who joined us this year and escorted us safely though the day, to Peel Region EMS for providing a vehicle to follow the riders and also to our friends from the Neighbourhood Mechanic Television show for taking an interest and dropping by for a look.
